Another vanity blog bites the dust: RIP PW

docweasel.com, with 250k pageviews a day, supports itself with the only ads that actually pay the bills, in fact, the only 2 industries that actually make money on the net: gambling and adult ads.

More examples of so-called “conservative” blogs not walking the walk when they talk the talk about fiscal conservatism. Ironically, these are the same blogs pontificating about the bail-out and decrying the government subsidy of businesses who can’t legitimately survive in the workplace.

They have been receiving welfare for quite a while from PJM, who hoped they would eventually begin to earn their way. They have failed, so PJM is shutting off the welfare spigot, and they are whinging like UAW workers forced to accept the realities of the capitalist system.

Apparently, some bloggers who run expensive servers and expansive blog networks are taking a hit because Pajamas Media is restricting its reportedly well-paying PJAds to only PJ hosted blogs. Some blogs, including Protein Wisdom, home to our good buddy Dan Collins might even go down completely. What is the point of even having these vanity sites that don’t make money?

Face the fact, not enough people care enough about your blog to support it financially. It’s hard to face for some of these guys, we guess, but don’t whinge about it.

There are sensible solutions, even if they don’t allow you to maintain big, money-losing organizations and web networks.

Get a fucking free blog, realize that your writing just isn’t valuable enough for PJM to keep losing money over it, and quit whinging. The amount of crying and stomping around by the blogs “fired” or what they perceive as being dissed by PJM is just hilarious. The world will get along quite well without any of you. You won’t be missed. So make good on your threats and close down your blogs. You’ll have sure showed the internet!

UPDATE: Roger Simon explains the situation. Seems PJM was basically paying people even though they weren’t actually earning the money. The welfare spigot is now off, the trough is empty, and of course the pigs are squealing:

I wrote a letter to the Pajamas Media network bloggers yesterday, some of whom took it a bit more personally than intended. We disbanded the ad network part of our business for a simple reason: it was losing money and we couldn’t see how in the reasonable future that would change.

Actually that part of our business has been losing money from the beginning, so the people getting their quarterly checks from PJM were getting a form of stipend from us in the hopes that advertisers would start to cotton to blogs and we could possibly make a profit. Didn’t happen. No wonder those people are kicking and screaming now that they are off the dole. I might too. [What's their beef? I thought most of them were free marketeer libertarians or something.-ed. Go figure.]

So PJM has been subsidizing these losers for a long time, and the ingrates are now bitching and throwing a tantrum because PJM won’t continue to support a bunch of failures. All in all, a story just full of schadenfreude. If these pricks had an ounce of decency, they’d pay back the money they have been sucking off the PJM teat instead of crying now that the welfare has ended.

Why don’t you just get a free wordpress or blogger account? What is the point in keeping your own domain and servers if you can’t justify it financially? We here at docweaselblog really hate the begging some blog owners do to keep their vanity blog up (you can read our castigation of the blegging Esmay, who called in personal problems about not having money to feed his kids as a reason for people to contribute to his vanity blog). PW is losing its PJ ads, so they claim they will have to shut down.

Face it: your writing is not a valuable commodity. You can’t support the bandwidth you expend with a business model. So, bite the bullet and get a free blog. It hurts your pride, we’re sure, but face reality: all the digital scribbling you and your cohorts are doing just isn’t worth anything in the real business world.

Probably 90% of the “vanity” blogs on the net are subsidized by the day job of the owner/operator. The more that go down, the better for the internet as a whole because server costs go down as unnecessary sites bite the dust.
